هنگامی که نیاز باشد تا برنامه ای را تحت محیط پیرامونی ویژه ای مورد بررسی و یا بازدید قرار دهید به سیستمی نیاز دارید تا این محیط را برای شما پیاده سازی کند. در مورد سیستم عامل ها تقریبا بهترین برنامه ای که این شبیه سازی را انجام می دهد محصولات خانواده VMware است که نسخه ۵ آن نیز به تازگی منتشر شده است.
اگر دنبال برنامه های باز متن این چنین باشید می توانید از گزینه های زیر انتخاب کنید :

Bochs is a highly portable open source IA-32 (x86) PC emulator written in C++, that runs on most popular platforms. It includes emulation of the Intel x86 CPU, common I/O devices, and a custom BIOS. Currently, Bochs can be compiled to emulate a 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro or AMD64 CPU, including optional MMX, SSE, SSE2 and 3DNow! instructions.

QEMU is a generic and open source processor emulator which achieves a good emulation speed by using dynamic translation. QEMU has two operating modes:

• Full system emulation. In this mode, QEMU emulates a full system (for example a PC), including a processor and various peripherials. It can be used to launch different Operating Systems without rebooting the PC or to debug system code.
  

• User mode emulation (Linux host only). In this mode, QEMU can launch Linux processes compiled for one CPU on another CPU.

بسيار زياد پيشرفت كرده است. زيبا تر و به روز تر. ولي هنوز مشكل دانلود دارد. بايد
در اين مورد فكري بكنند.

VMware 5.0 mainly introduces collaboration features that make it easier to
share common configurations with co-workers. GNU/Linux support has also been
enhanced, and there is preliminary support for Solaris x86 and more recent
builds of Microsoft Windows "Longhorn" beta.

خوب پشتيباني از
سولاريس قدم بزرگي هست، البته به شرطي كه با سخت افزار ها مشكلي پيدا نكنه. Cloning
هم مي تونه در موقعيت هايي كه امكان استفاده از چندين كامپيوتر رو نداريد تمرين
خوبي براي كلاستر بازي باشه.

VMware Workstation is supposed
to be for software developers and testers and support personnel. It’s also
useful as a tool for system administrators. Instead of having discrete test
servers, you can have an exact copy of your production servers in VMware and
experiment all you want without harming the production environment. If
you’re running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 as a file server, you could
install VMware on it, install RHEL 3 as a virtual machine, then go crazy
with experimental changes and see how the virtual test server reacts. If you
create a snapshot of the virtual server as it is in production, you can
"roll back" your changes to the original state — no matter how much damage
they might have done — in a matter of minutes.
